Wild Borage

On our trip through Molesworth Station in the South Island last week we noticed a lot of this blue flower everywhere.

It is called blue Borage (Echium Vulgare).  As far as I can tell it's not related to the herb I have growing at home but it does have the same bright blue flower.

It grew well along the dirt road and near the river, but also popped up in small groups in other places.

Quite a stunning little flower to find growing wild.

  2. It's very pretty but we quickly learnt not to take it inside the house as it attracts the flies.

  5. Amazing photos Jocee!
I love Borage and it often pops up in my garden. The flowers are great to add to salads and can be crystallised to use on cakes!
Molesworth Station is on my bucket list, I've never been to a high country station!

  12. Jocee, firstly, thank you for following my blog. We do seem to share a lot of the same interests.
I wonder if your Echium is one of those imports from South Africa that is similar to the strain 'Plantagimeum' that infest the country on our side of the Ditch., commonly called Patterson's Curse in good years and Salvation Jane in bad ones as the sheep can just survive on the in a drought. Unfortunately I have only been to the N.Island of your beautiful country.
    Happy farming!

  13. The Borage family certainly excels in blue flowers, they are a lovely color. I especially like the magenta-colored stamens.
