ABC Wednesday - Q is for...

Quail

These Chinese Painted Quail (also known as Button Quail) live in my aviary with the Canary's and Finches.

The male has very striking markings.  They are small quail at about 12cm (4 1/2 in) tall.

The female is a silver variety.  Their chicks are like little bumble bees running around the floor.   They can be a bit hard to breed but hopefully this year these two will hatch the eggs she is sitting on and raise their chicks successfully.

  4. In the area where I live, there used to be many quail running wild. Forty years ago I remember seeing some running through our yard at our old house, but I haven't seen any for years now. The area has expanded in population enormously over those years.
