Tui

The Tui is one of our native birds.  They are very active at the moment while they pair up and the males can be heard all through the day.

I have been trying to get a good picture of one for a while but they are good at avoiding me.  They will sit quite close and sing when I don't have my camera but hide in the bushes when I do.

This handsome fellow was keeping me company in the garden and I managed to get some reasonable shots.  He was singing his heart out trying to impress the ladies - he certainly impressed me!

You can see the white feather markings on the back of his neck, and they have a little tuft of white feathers under their chin as well.  Lovely birds to have around and they are breeding well in our area.

  3. These are incredible shots Jocee!
We have a huge Totara tree on our property and it is home to the Tui from time to time!
However I've never managed to photograph them as they hide near the top of the tree... I can hear them perfectly - it's so frustrating!

  15. Tropical birds do seem to have prettier feathers. I love the iridescent greens on the feathers, and the white feathers on the neck. I find it very hard to get close to any birds for photography, good work!
